Comments: This issue of New Masses, a American workers' monthly steeped in Marxism, is from September 5, 1939. The issue is titled "Why the Pact was Signed: A Guide to the Crisis." As the cover indicates, it includes articles about national and international politics by Theodore Draper, Alter Brody, John Stark, and Richard H. Rovere, among other articles, reviews, and comments. The text inside is illustrated with political cartoons by artists such as Mischa Richter, Gardner Rea, and Crockett Johnson. The magazine is from the private collection of political cartoonist Art Young. It is in good condition with minor wear, slight tears and holes on cover. Named after its predecessor, Masses (1911--1917), the New Masses was a prominent organ of the American cultural left that ran from 1926 to 1948. Famous contributors include John Sloan, William Carlos Williams, Theodore Dreiser, Upton Sinclair, Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison, Dorothy Parker, Langston Hughes, Eugene O'Neill, and Ernest Hemingway. This scarce copy provides a rare glimpse into the political tumult of Depression-era America.
