Comments: This rare and unusual map of Japan features a graphic illustration of the islands with pictorial depictions of mountains and forts. An inset of Tunquin (North Vietnam) depicts the river system centered on Hanoi and the Gulf on Tonkin. The Sea of Korea and the country's tip can be seen below the inset. Moses Pitt, a British bookseller and publisher, released this English edition of Tavernier's original French map in 1680. The map has been intensively repaired and has some stains, but it remains a good copy of this hard-to-find map. Jean Baptiste Tavernier (1605-1689) was a famous French traveler who voyaged most extensively in India and Persia. His two volumes of "Les Six Voyages de Jean-Baptiste Tavernier" document his travels and commercial contacts. While he never made it to Japan, this scarce map evidences the wide range of contacts he made during his voyages.Language: English
