Comments: This map of Mexico is from Bradford's 1835 "Comprehensive Atlas," the first atlas to include a map of the Republic of Texas. Published in the first year of the Texas Revolution, the map depicts the Southwest under Mexican control. Here, Texas is named Coahuila & Texas, and California is also included with its northern border at the Oregon Territory. From here, the map extends south to show all of Central America and the Caribbean. The index includes Indian tribes and place names such as Ft. Del Norte, San Francisco, San Diego, Santa Fe and S. Juan in place of Taos. The map was published in Bradford's "Comprehensive Atlas Geographical, Historical and Commercial." It is in good condition with scattered foxing and minor aging around edges, stain to upper left corner. Thomas Gamaliel Bradford (1802-1887) was a Boston-based map publisher best known for his "important contributions to American cartography, the 1838 "Illustrated Atlas Geographical, Statistical and Historical of the United States and Adjacent Countries." Unlike many other atlases of the period, the volume included extensive text on the history, economics and geography of the areas mapped. His work represented an important contribution to American cartography, as this fine map clearly demonstrates.
