Description: Map. Lithograph with original hand coloring. Image measures 14" x 21 3/4".

Comments: This dynamically-rendered map provides a topographical description of Monmouth County, New Jersey, with the Atlantic Ocean to the far right. Published in1872, this map outlines the county in a vibrant pink to separate it from the surrounding areas, which are labeled in bold capital letters. Each district of the county is hand-colored, with the major cities designated by dark green. Hachure marks indicate mountains and swamp areas, and the thick black lines that run mainly diagonally across the map depict railroads. Major roads, settlements, schools, and churches are also marked. This map is from Beers' 1872 "State Atlas of New Jersey," and on the back of the map's left page is a similar topographical map of Mercer County (11" x 14 1/2"). Both maps are in good condition, with some browning in the margins and a stain in the lower margin not affecting the image. The map is fairly clean throughout with some minor foxing, although there is slight offsetting of the title in the upper right-hand corner from being closed in the atlas. Frederick W. Beers (1858-1929) continued the work of his father James Botsford Beers and was known for his county survey maps of New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Connecticut and Vermont.
