Description: Color lithograph. Image measures 13" x 17 1/2". Sheet measures 21" x 27 1/4". Plate XIV.

Comments: This graphic color lithograph depicts the central portion of the tomb of Prince Merab, or Merhat, the son of the builder of the Great Pyramid, King Khufu. Published in 1887, the print represents in detail the sculptural and painted images and hieroglyphics adorning the walls of the tomb, which is now housed in the Royal Museum in Berlin. Prince Merab stands at the center surrounded by his extended family. Facing him are seven rows of the various Egyptian people who comprise his subjects. This print is from a limited edition of Binion's "Ancient Egypt or Mizraim," Vol. II, considered a landmark of American chromolithography. This print is vibrantly colored and in very good condition with very minimal wear to the background. There is a stain near the caption of the print and some tears on the left edge of the sheet, but they do not affect the quality of the image. Samuel Augustus Binion (1853-1914) was a Polish author, traveler, and translator. With "Ancient Egypt," he sought to present Egyptian history, art, and architecture in a thorough manner. He intended the size of the work to be sumptuous enough to allow for the faithful depiction of buildings, ornamentation, hieroglyphics, and decorations in their original colors, yet still manageable for use in both private and public libraries.
