Comments: This subtly detailed map of China is labeled with towns, rivers, and islands, as well as the five "Free Ports," which are underscored for emphasis. The upper right hand corner is designated as "COBI Great Sandy Desert called by the Chinese SHAMO." The map also includes the peninsula of Korea, designated as "Corea," part of Japan, and Taiwan. The map has some chipping on the margins and small stains concentrated around the Bay of Nanking, but is in otherwise good condition. Samuel Augustus Mitchell Sr. (1792-1868) published this map as part of the first edition of his seminal New Universal Atlas. Mitchell is one of the pioneers in American cartography of the 19th century and led the conversion of engraved map plates to more affordable lithographic plates.Edition: First
