Amusing Typed Letter Signed about Penmanship

Poughkeepsie: 1936.

1 page on "Vassar College / Office of the President" letterhead, 8 x 7 inches, Poughkeepsie, January 4, 1936, in part: "...It is the irony of life that my signature should be requested in an exhibition of penmanship...for as a child I spent hundreds of miserable hours trying to write a system of penmanship which was beyond my abilities. Later...I taught school and among the subjects I taught was penmanship...not allowing the class to see a specimen of my own handwriting...so ashamed was I of it!" Several folds and mounting stains on verso; otherwise very good condition.

American pacifist, educator, and president of Vassar College. In 1926 he founded Sarah Lawrence College in New York with millionaire William Lawrence, serving as President until 1936.
