Description: Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 18" x 22 1/8".

Comments: Beautiful and early map of New York Harbor showing the area between Sandy Hook and Westchester with part of Long Island. Includes the Rariton River, Staten Island, Amboy, Elizabeth Town, Newark, Bergen, Manhattan, Harlem, Gravesend, Redhook, Flatbush, New Town and Flushing. The chart details the difficulties of maneuvering ships in the harbor though it also reveals New York's excellent port location. North is oriented to the right. This chart, first published in "The English Pilot" (Book Four) circa 1732, was at that time the only printed chart of the area available. Although it is highly inaccurate, it was published uncorrected until the late 18th century. This edition was published between 1742 and 1760. Expert repairs to centerfold and loss at lower left. Margins cropped.

You've got yourself one happy customer at this end, folks. I've been looking for another copy of "West of the Indus" for nearly twenty years (I know, it's such a cultural wasteland out here in the provinces), and I never expected to find one with a dust jacket. I am amazed. Thank you so much. I've enjoyed many books over the years, but this one has always been one of my favorites. Now if I can just figure out how to share it with my friends without losing it... - Paul B.
