Description: 3 pages, each two-page spread measuring 8.25 x 10 inches. Historically important signed card in French -- a memento from the private inaugural party hosted by newly elected president Hassan Gouled Aptidon, announcing the Proclamation de la Republique de Djibouti and its Declaration of Independence, June 27, 1977. The inside contains a photograph of Aptidon dressed in traditional attire with a printed quote from his acceptance speech assuring the people of Djibouti that: "I will uphold the Constitution...of the Republique." Fine signature in Arabic accompanied by the President's official stamp. Faint rusted paperclip stain on the top margin; otherwise near fine.

Comments: Somali-born first President of Djibouti (1977 - 1999) who played an important role in his country's struggle for independence from France.
