Rare Autographed Letter Signed in German
Berlin: 1901.
Exceedingly rare one-page letter, 8.5 x 5.5 inches, Berlin, July 26, 1901. In this letter, Eisner declines an invitation. Translated in part: "Most honored Sir, Thanking you for your most friendly invitation, which I would gladly have gotten away for...but I am afraid that I have much work to complete." One horizontal fold and a diagonal crease on the lower portion; still very good condition.
Jewish-Bavarian radical politician who organized the Socialist Revolution that overthrew the Wittelsbach Monarchy in Bavaria on Nov. 8, 1918. He was assassinated on February 21, 1919, having served less than three months in office. Adolf Hitler made it his personal agenda to make sure that all of Eisner's papers, notes, journals, publications, etc. were destroyed when he came to power, accounting for the extreme scarcity of anything signed by Eisner. In the past twenty years there have been less than five documented sales of Eisner letters -- all sold through a German auction house. There are no listings of sales in American Book Prices nor any confirmed sales recorded on Art-Fact. Eisner is rare in any form, and handwritten letters (regardless of content) are the scarcest.
