Description: View. Black and white lithograph. Image measures 9 7/8" x 13 15/16".

Comments: Upclose view of the careening bodies mid-tackle at a football game (catalogue number C-31, unknown edition, proofs only.) Stone is dated and signed "JSG". Signature and edition number (5) in pencil. Additional penciled "John Curry" at lower left. This print is related to several black crayon and oil sketches of similar subject matter, also from 1938. John Steuart Curry (1897-1946) was an American Regionalist painter and print maker, known for his scenes of rural America. This print was part of a series printed by George L. Miller and distributed by the Associated American Artists. From 1934-1949, the AAA sought to disseminate their work to the public in an affordable manner: they generally produced each print in editions of 250 and sold them for $5 a piece, first through department stores and later by themselves. The group focused on representational and regional artists including Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton. Minor tape residue to top corners.

I'm writing to let you know that the book arrived safely yesterday. I also wanted to thank you for your very professional and awesome packaging job. It's so nice to know that some people do care when packaging vintage and antique books for their customers (I say this because I've had some bad experiences recently with some other book dealers who did a miserable job of packaging a book from 1824). Best, -V.W.
