Date Published: 1943

Description: View. Black and white lithograph. Image measures 11.75" x 15.5".

Comments: Dramatic view of two horses intertwined in an aggressive embrace (catalogue number C-39) from an edition of 250. Stone is signed with initials and date. Title, signature and edition number (2) in pencil. Inscription in pencil reads "Use this print but get it no darker", indicating that this is perhaps an artist's proof. George L. Miller's signature is also present. This print is related to earlier oil painting (1930), a watercolor study and a drawing. John Steuart Curry (1897-1946) was an American Regionalist painter and print maker, known for his scenes of rural America. This print was part of a series printed by George L. Miller and distributed by the Associated American Artists. From 1934-1949, the AAA sought to disseminate their work to the public in an affordable manner: they produced each print in editions of 250 and sold them for $5 a piece, first through department stores and later by themselves. The group focused on representational and regional artists including Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton. Tape residue in top corners.

Dear Mr. Hample, Just a short note to confirm receipt of the book and my absolute satisfaction with it. I am in the process of building a library of books from the interwar period to document and understand the events as seen by contemporaries as very often knowledge of what happened afterwards colours the views of historians. I am mainly focussed on Italian matters but books describing current events in other countries such as Germany, UK, France, Spain, Japan and the US are of interest to me. If you have a catalogue or can indicate to me any other books that you think could interest me, I would be very gratefll.Thank you in advance and best regards. - Massimo C.
