Place Published: Washington
Date Published: 1821

Description: 2.25 x 6 inches, drawn on the Bank of the United States, City of Washington, December 20, 1821, for $5.00. Signed and completed in Porter's hand. The cancellation punch marks barely touch the top portion of the "P" in Porter but do not detract. This check was most likely drafted when Porter was on the Board of Navy Commissioners, a post he would leave one year later to command an expedition to suppress piracy in the West Indies. Very good condition.

Comments: Officer in the United States Navy who rose to the rank of Commodore and later, Commander-in-chief of the Mexican Navy. He was the father of David Dixon Porter and the adoptive father of Admiral David Farragut.

I just finished reading about the store and your family in Nick Basbanes newest book, Patience & Fortitude. I had previously read an article in Book magazine. I wished that I lived near so I could visit your store, it looks and sounds like a place I dream of getting lost in. Basbanes book mentioned that your father began a memoir but was, sadly, unable to finish the work. Would it be in anyway possible to read what must be a great historical adventure in bookselling? I wish you all continued success and a very long existence. - Steven Griese
