Description: View. Pencil drawing. Page measures 5.75" x 8.75".

Comments: View of two docked sailboats, evidently a sketch for a painting, circa 1908. Text on verso reads "Big Boat, Old Yellow near Boat., old Grey with touches of green and dull red farther Boat white on top and brown on water". Charles P. Rising (1859-1920) was a landscape artist born in Auburn, New York near the Finger Lakes. Artistically inclined from an early age, Rising studied with Hudson River painter George Clough (1825-1901). Rising worked in a variety of media including charcoal, oil, watercolor and pencil, and his delicate drawings clearly reflect the inspiration he found in the enchanting landscapes of his native region. Light overall smudging.
