Place Published: Nashua
Date Published: 1838

Description: 2 pages (front and back), 9.75 x 8 inches, Nashua, October 25, 1838, apologizing to a constituent who is trying to secure an appointment as Purser in the U.S. Navy, in part: "...I do not have a personal acquaintence with Mr. [Hiram] Paulding and feel some delicacy about writing him directly on the subject..." Natural folds; very good(+) condition.

Comments: Atherton was a Democratic politician from New Hampshire who served in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, dying at age 48. He is best known for his staunch stance on states-rights issues and what appears to be his support of slavery. Paulding, who served in the Navy from the War of 1812 to the Civil War, was eventually appointed a Commodore by President Lincoln.

I must confess that one of the best parts of any trip I make to NYC is to visit your bookstore and be received with such kindness. Today I had two big pleasures: Argosy and Renne Flemming's performance... If I have time on this trip I will again pass by your store again, otherwise I will contact you from Brazil. Best regards, - Eduardo
