Description: 1 page, 17 x 22 inches, no place, May 12, 1897. This document appoints the owner of the New York Giants baseball team Postmaster of New York City, in part: "...for and during the term of four years from the twelfth of May, 1897..." Co-signed by James A. Gary as postmaster General. This document is uniformly toned with two discoloration marks caused by the disintegration of the original ribbon; slight weaknesses at the center fold which do not detract from the dark bold signatures. Very good(-) condition.
Comments: Cornelius Van Cott was the owner of the New York Giants National League Baseball Club from 1893-1897. He had been appointed Postmaster of New York City by President Cleveland from 1889-1893. Upon completion of this commission, he purchased The New York Giants.Signed: Y
