Important Department of State memorandum, 1 page, 10 x 7.75 inches, Washington, April 22, 1911, embossed letterhead and Great Seal, concerning the sanitary conditions in the Territory of Hawaii, in part: "...I have the honor to inform you with regret that cholera has again appeared in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii, a case having occurred on April 12 and two additional cases being reported on April 15...the local health authorities, assisted by officers of the Marine Hospital Service, are taking every possible precaution to avoid the extension of the disease..." Note: despite Secretary Knox's assurances, the emergence of cholera in 1911 devastated the Hawaiian population in epidemic proportions, but virtually bypassed foreigners. Horizontal folds; small, pale signature. Very good condition.
