The author, an important Pythagorean philosopher, maintains the idea that all things have neither a beginning nor an end. This work, is generally known as On the nature of the Universe. In it he maintains that the human race, with all its institutions (the family, marriage, etc.), must be eternal. In addition, he advocates an ascetic mode of life with a view to the perfect reproduction of the race and its training in all that is noble and beautiful.
