Comments: Beautiful portrait from the folio edition of McKenney and Hall's "History of the Indian Tribes of North America". As Superintendent of the Indian Trade Bureau, Thomas McKenney wanted to document the rapidly disappearing culture of the American natives. He activated the project, sponsored by the War Department, by commissioning writer James Hall and Charles Bird King, a renowned American portraitist. King painted the prominent Indians while they visited Washington D.C. as treaty delegates. Most of the original oil paintings were destroyed by fire in the Smithsonian Museum in 1865. These lithographs, published 1842-58, are all that remain and are still hailed as one of the best visual records of influential Native Americans of the nineteenth century. Children were considered blessings by all tribes, a sentiment evident in this portrait. The commonly used cradleboard is also illustrated. Overall toning with tape residue and chipping along edges. One of many Native American portraits in our collection.

Let me take a moment to let you know how pleased I am not only with your timeliness and help, but also your honesty and commitment to your customers. As an instructor at Duquesne University, I am always telling my students about responsibility and, lately, some of the book dealers have given me unnecessary difficulties... I am very pleased with the service I received from your company and will inform my fellow faculty members that they can look forward to professional service from your book shop. Again many thanks and I look forward to future dealings with your company. - Tom W.
