This work is "...an exhaustive history of internal improvements...covering the development of transportation in the New England and Middle Atlantic states and Maryland." DAB XV, p. 70. Contains the financial statistics of each railroad, including the latest capital structure, latest revenue, net income, cost of equipment, and current board of directors. This is volume one of a planned three volume work. The other volumes were never published because of the Civil War. This volume lacks the 2 maps which were sometimes issued in a separate volume.
