Comments: Beautiful portrait from the folio edition of McKenney and Hall's "History of the Indian Tribes of North America". As Superintendent of the Indian Trade Bureau, Thomas McKenney wanted to document the rapidly disappearing culture of the American natives. He activated the project, sponsored by the War Department, by commissioning writer James Hall and Charles Bird King, a renowned American portraitist. King painted the prominent Indians while they visited Washington D.C. as treaty delegates. Most of the original oil paintings were destroyed by fire in the Smithsonian Museum in 1865. These lithographs, published 1842-58, are all that remain and are still hailed as one of the best visual records of influential Native Americans of the nineteenth century. Kish-Kallo-Wa was a great chief of the Shawnee tribe who inspired many legends, some perhaps mythical. Small chips to corners, light overall toning and offsetting. Two tears to edges and minor paper rippling. One of many Native American portraits in our collection.

I recently purchased a book from you, having searched via the internet. The book came yesterday and this note commends your service and quick response. I was impressed with the care taken to wrap the book with tissue paper and several layers of corrugated cardboard, as well as the speed with which you must have sent it out. It arrived only a week after the order, in spite of the Thanksgiving holiday. I thank you for the attention paid to the quality of my order and hope we will do more business. - Steve C.
