Comments: Portrait of Mary Somerville (1780-1872), Scottish science writer and polymath. She was able to "translate" complicated scientific theories into common language. In 1835, she and Caroline Herschel became the first women members of the Royal Astronomical Society. Smudge to left margin, minor aging to edges. I've been looking for another copy of "West of the Indus" for nearly twenty years (I know, it's such a cultural wasteland out here in the provinces), and I never expected to find one with a dust jacket.
