Description: 1 page, 8 x 5 inches, no place, November 26, 1862. Scarce war-date letter to David Dougherty, written while he was chaplain at Fort McHenry, ministering to Union and Confederate alike, in part: "...You have been appointed to call the meeting this afternoon to nominate the officers. Let me know at once whether you accept..." Two horizontal folds; small black ink stain on the top edge. Very good condition.

Comments: Cardinal Gibbons, Roman Catholic prelate established Washington University. In 1886 Pope Leo XIII made Gibbons the second American cardinal ever.
