Description: Botanical print. Copper engraving with hand coloring. Plate 399. Page measures 18.25" x 11".

Comments: Illustration from the English first edition of "A Curious Herbal", exotic plants from the New World used for medicinal purposes. Small crease to lower right corner, small chip to left edge. Elizabeth Blackwell (1707-1758) was trained as an artist but untrained in botany. She collaborated with her botanist husband while he was in debtor's prison and with the curator of the Chelsea Physick Garden where the plants were under cultivation. She engraved the copper printing plates for the 500 images and also hand-colored the illustrations. The financial success of the book led to her husband's release from prison. I just finished reading about the store and your family in Nick Basbanes newest book, Patience & Fortitude. I had previously read an article in Book magazine. I wished that I lived near so I could visit your store, it looks and sounds like a place I dream of getting lost in. Basbanes book mentioned that your father began a memoir but was, sadly, unable to finish the work. Would it be in anyway possible to read what must be a great historical adventure in bookselling? I wish you all continued success and a very long existence. - Steven Griese
