Description: 1 page, 9.5 x 7.75 inches, no place, February 17, 1862. Written to Captain (later Admiral) A.M. Pennock requesting permission to command a tug for two hours so that he can escort another surgeon to the U.S. Essex, and then, back to Capt. Porter. Two horizontal folds and a tiny chip along the bottom edge; still very good condition.

Comments: Riley was a surgeon who had to undertake the rank of "Acting Volunteer Lieutenant" aboard the U.S.Essex under Captain A.M. Pennock. Riley resigned in February, 1863 after completing service in the Mississippi squadron.

I flew to NY from CA a couple of weeks ago, and while walking 59th, happened upon Argosy... Amazing!
