The New and Complete American Encyclopaedia: Or, Universal Dictionary of Arts and Sciences; on an Improved Plan...
Place Published: New York
Date Published: 1805
Description: 7 volumes. Illustrated with 100 copper plate engravings. Short folios, original 1/4 black leather over cloth. New York: J. & E. Low, 1805- 1811. First American Edition.
Comments: The title page states that there are 170 plates. Although this set lacks many of them (including most of the maps), it is unclear how many were actually inserted, as the pagination is inconsistent and some plates have duplicate numbers. All copies of this book, including the one in the Library of Congress, have less than 170 plates. There is the usual browning and scattered foxing, but altogether a sound, attractive set of this early encyclopedia begun by John Low & finished after his death by E. Low.Binding: hardcover
