Description: 1 page, 11 x 7 inches, signed in full by Walters on September 16, 1764. This letter is certifying a lease for a ship from John Hancock to the British Navy in Louisbourg, Nova Scotia, in part: "John Hancock, Esq., Merchant in Boston...the sloop, Sally, Master John Bragoon, burthen about 27 tons that was taken into service of the Government, the 24th day of April last, has been employed here until the 16th of September following, from which time he is allowed fifteen days to carry home..." This document is dated four months before the Stamp Act of 1765, which spurred Hancock's identification with the Patriot cause and permanently turned him against the British. Horizontal folds; chipped along top edge not affecting the text. Very good condition.
