Description: folding map of Kentucky. xvi, 232pp. 8vo, contemporary mottled calf, leather label, gilt spine; (spine ends and edges of corners very lightly worn; light foxing to several pages, not affecting map). Paris: Buisson, 1785. First French Edition.

Comments: A tight and bright copy. This copy lacks the last two pages, pages 233 and 234, which contain the "Approbation" and the "Permission du Roi." The second edition of this work after the Wilmington, 1784 edition. The map is the first map of Kentucky. Towns, trails, houses, and forts are depicted. "John Filson's work was the first attempt to record the history of Kentucky in book form...The map itself is quite valuable. ... This popular history of the early West was apparently issued in a limited edition and soon became scarce. It was translated into the French by M. Parraud...in Paris, 1785 as the second edition." Coleman 3239. The second part of the text is on Daniel Boone. "The most famous and important frontier book of the period, by a frontiersman who was later killed by Indians. Particularly important for its first map of Kentucky and its first published life of Daniel Boone." Vail, Voice of the Old Frontier, 694. Howes F-129. Clark II, 23. Sabin 24338.
