Description: 2 pages (front and back) on white paper with an imprinted Paris logo on the upper left corner, 6.25 x 4.25 inches, New York, May 16, 1849. Written by the Army General and diplomat, describing the early career of a colleague, in part: "...He was uniformly distinguished in the expedition for intelligent zeal & efficiency...I considered him a highly meritorious young officer, & leaving the army...was universally regretted by all his brother officers..." Heavily creased and folded; stained in the upper left corner. Good condition.
