Description: 2 volumes. Illustrated with 2 (of 3?) folding plates before the index in the second volume. x, [ii], 385, [1]; [iv], 387-775, [19]pp. 4to, bound in the original drab blue/grey boards, possibly rebacked in nearly identical material; holograph paper spine labels, uncut edges (corners of boards are bumped and worn; scattered foxing throughout; bookplate in first volume). London: Printed for J. Johnston, 1798. First edition. A very good solid copy of this important work.

Comments: A seminal work in the field of education. This was the first of many collaborations between the well-known Irish novelist Maria Edgeworth and her father. Inspired by Rousseau, and contrary to the prevailing wisdom, she stressed that education could be a dynamic, creative and enjoyable experience. "The most important work on general pedagogy to appear in this country between Locke's Thoughts and Herbert Spencer's Essay in 1861." - Muirhead 57; Slade 3a.
