Description: 1 page, 8 x 5 inches, written in Pencil from his private island, No Man's Land, July 29, 1901, in part: "...I trust that you are doing good work, and having a good time. I am greatly delighted with my outlandish Island, and may remain here for two months. Drop me a line telling me if the fish is received..." Accompanied by a 1.5 x 3-inch calling card and a 6.25 x 9.25-inch envelope. The card has the place and date handwritten and identifies the bearer as "Late Inspector General Imperial Japanese Navy." The card and letter bear straight-pin holes; a small rectangle of letter is pale where the card preserved the original color). Very good(-) condition.

Comments: Civil War Navy officer who became an Inspector General and Rear Admiral of the Imperial Japanese Navy and is credited with developing the Japanese Navy, later to defeat China (at the Battle of Yellow River, which Grinnell participated in) and Russia at sea.
