Description: 2 pages (front and back), 7 x 4.5 inches, no place, June 19, 1892. Written by the Union Major-General to Civil War historian William Ropes, in part: "Mrs. Smith has rented a cottage at York Harbor from a son of Captain...who is much of the time in an asylum. She has just heard from one of the frequenters of the Harbor that he (the son) is sometimes at liberty and is looked upon as the horror of the town...Can I aid you this summer in overhauling the Record for any part of your book on the history of the war? I shall have much time..." Crease expertly repaired; very good condition.

Dear Argosy. THANK YOU very very much. I ordered the book "A Case of Removal of the Lower Jaw, for Osteo-Sarcoma of Immense Size" by George C. Blackman. I was pleased beyond words just to think that I was getting an original copy of a book that my great great grandfather wrote. When it arrived it was an even bigger treasure for me, as his own handwriting was in the upp right corner of the cover, giving the book to a fellow colleague.
