Written by the Union Major-General to Civil War historian William Ropes, in part: "Mrs. Smith has rented a cottage at York Harbor from a son of Captain...who is much of the time in an asylum. She has just heard from one of the frequenters of the Harbor that he (the son) is sometimes at liberty and is looked upon as the horror of the town...Can I aid you this summer in overhauling the Record for any part of your book on the history of the war? I shall have much time..." Crease expertly repaired; very good condition.
