Girtnanner (1760-1800) set out to produce a text on pediatrics which was based on first-hand observations rather than a reformulation of earlier books on the subject. The work is comprised of 16 chapters detailing the differences between the child and adult, nutrition, care of the newborn, wet-nursing, weaning, etc. Chapter 15 described 26 common disease from ages 3 to 7, with a long section on smallpox and inoculation. Blake, p. 176. Girtanner was also author of an important book on the veneral disease (GM 5199).
