1 page, 11 x 8.5 inches, Los Angeles, September 26, 1950. Written to publisher Cornelius Vanderbilt, Jr., refusing to lend his name to a political campaign out of fear of reprisal, in part: "Some of my colleagues' careers have been seriously damaged by irresponsible people calling them names in the press and in books...just because they supported candidates that were not liked by those who do not really believe in the Constitution and the American democracy I love...Therefore I decided a year ago not to participate publicly in any political committees or campaigns..." Slight tearing around a staple in the upper left corner; very good(-) condition.

Austrian-born actor best known for his roles in "Casablanca" and "Of Human Bondage."
