Item #132447 Autographed Envelope. Alfred Lord TENNYSON, 1809 - 1892.

Autographed Envelope

1860.

This envelope, handwritten with the return address, place, and date, is postmarked over the signature "A Tennyson." The instruction to "Pay Mrs. Andrews on order twenty-one pounds" is also in Tennyson's hand. An ornate stamp from the National Provincial Bank of England-Newport indicates that this used envelope was reused as a check. 4.5 x 7 inches, no place, November 15, 1860. Several folds and creases and lightly stained; very good(-) condition.

Mrs. Andrews is likely to be Joanna (known as 'Annie') Andrews, who is variously described as the "cook" or "housekeeper" at Farringford, where Tennyson lived on the Isle of Wight. Her sister, Elizabeth, was the nurse in the same household.
