Comments: Russel was a British artist who traveled to Rome in 1740 and lived there until his death in 1763. While living in Rome, he served as a tour guide for wealthy Englishmen on their Grand Tour, his letters mentioning that this gave him easier access to paintings in private residences. He was one of the first Englishmen to recognize the importance of Herculaneum and its excavations. Later, Russel also became a broker for ancient art being sold to the English. Rare.
