Author was a surgeon who joined other buccaneers on a voyage to Panama. They went inland and captured the town of Santa Maria. They then sailed the Pacific as far south as the Juan Fernandez Islands. On his return trip through Panama, Wafer was injured in a gunpowder accident. He spent several months with the Indians of Darien. During this time he treated the Indians' ailments. "...it (this work) is still an extremely interesting and valuable account of the people (Darien Indians) while they retained their primitive and savage freedom." DNB XX, 427. Sabin 100944.
