Description: 4 pages (front and back) with each two-page spread measuring 7.25 x 9.25 inches, Washington, D.C., April 3, 1861. Written two weeks before the start of the war regarding an army surgeon, Dr. Barthelow, who had invented a substitute for gunpowder (Barthelow was killed at Bull Run), in part: "Dr. Barthelow, Surgeon in the army, has invented a substitute for Gunpowder (the most useful & desirable invention for these troubled times) and desires to be ordered to Washington in order to test his invention..." With 3 endorsements on pages 3 and 4, including generals James B. Fry and Lorenzo Thomas. Heavy discoloration; page 4 has been skillfully edged and mounted along the outer edge. Good condition.
