Description: 1 page, 10 x 7.75 inches, Camp at Mt. Jackson, June 16, 1862. Letter signed as brigadier general to the governor of New York, recommending a lieutenant for a promotion, in part: "From a slight acquaintance with 1st Lieut. Wm. H. Chesebrough of 11th U.S. Infy, now Aid de Camp upon the staff of Brig Genl Schenck, & from the representations made to me by friends...I feel justified in recommending him...& in believing that the bestowal of a field-office upon him would not only reward a meritorious officer but add efficiency to the service." Small tears along the horizontal folds; paperclip impression in the top margin; docketed on the back. Very good(-) condition.
