William Brattle. Original 41-page manuscript dated April 17, 1682. Bound in the original 24mo sheepskin notebook (edgeworn but sound). The middle 10 pages are additional manuscript notes of William Appleton dated April 18, 1731. The last 12 pages are manuscript notes of Mr. Stone of Hartford dated February 14, 1788. (Lacks the last leaf of Stone's notes.)
William Brattle was a Congregatonal minister. After graduating Harvard College in 1680, he became a tutor there. From 1696 to 1700, Brattle was a Fellow of the Harvard Corporation. Previously he helped to administer Harvard during the four years President Increase Mather was in England.
In the manuscript, Brattle lists 18 ethical questions on points of marriage, law, abortion, and religion. Each question is written again, with seven additional questions, all followed by extensive answers. The format suggests that it was used by Brattle as lecture notes in a course he was teaching. His brother, Thomas, graduated from Harvard in 1676 and was treasurer of the college from 1693 to 1713. The notes by Appleton refer to his religious views. The last section by Stone is religious in nature and may have been notes for a sermon.
